The 10 Biggest Myths about Coworking

“Coworking is only for millennials who don’t drink tap water.” “I heard they don’t wear shoes in shared offices.” “Do you know it’s a first come, first serve basis. If you’re late, you have to stand and work.” When it comes to coworking, there are some crazy rumours out there. Our favorite one is that you have to invite all of your fellow coworkers to your wedding. Everyone thinks they know what coworking is like. But the reality is, unless you’ve been a part of a shared office space, you wouldn’t know any better than these rumours. And the last thing we want is for you to get put-off joining the ultimate coworking community, because you were planning on having a small wedding ceremony...

To clear this all up once and for all, we decided to dispel the 10 biggest myths about coworking. Here we go.

#1 It’s just space

Top of the list without a doubt, has to be the myth that coworking offices are just glorified warehouses. Big empty rooms with nothing else going on inside of them. We suppose the easiest way to debunk this myth would be to invite you all to one of our coworking sites. But if you’re enjoying the read, we’ll set the record straight from our keyboard. Coworking spaces are masterfully laid out offices. Complete with a wide spectrum of utilities, cleaning services, office supplies, refreshments, and event opportunities - providing you with everything you need (and then some) for a premium functioning office space.

#2 It’s too noisy

Yes. There is noise. How could there not be? Ideas are being born, partnerships are being forged, friendships are being made. But most importantly, work is being done. If you’re imagining keyboard warriors (that sound like they’re playing the bongo drums on their open laptop) or a handful of freelancers humming to the top 40, then you need to keep reading. At memos, each of our sites offer private soundproof booths and dedicated desks that allow you to surrender your senses in complete silence. Although collaboration is key, all of our coworkers are here for the same reason you are – to create their life’s work.

#3 You are forced to collaborate

This is one of those myths about coworking that really forces us to laugh. We ourselves were envisioning a farm row of fixed desks, set up for “speed-dating” style collab sessions. It goes without saying, you are not forced to collaborate, network or even socialize with any of your coworkers. Of course, we encourage you to enjoy the community of our office, but also to relish in the freedom and independence of being a coworker. How you choose to spend your time at memos is completely up to you – your space, your rules.

#4 It’s not professional enough

If you picture coworking as a clan of tech-junkies sitting around on second-hand furniture, then you’re sorely mistaken. With our state-of-the-art meeting rooms, sophisticated layouts and tasteful design elements, your contacts will know you strive for innovation, creativity and contemporary workflow. Coworking spaces also highlight the fact that you’re more focused on your products and services than ordering staples for your monthly office supply. So, stop worrying about your clients dodging rollerbladers at reception. Your brand-new rented office space is really what’s going to knock them off their feet.

#5 There’s no privacy

Just because you’ve joined a coworking community does not mean you’re about to overhear fights between your fellow coworkers and their landlords every lunch break. Nor does it mean you’ll be forced to judge a live version of the office X-factor, as your coworkers singalong to their favorite Spotify playlists. In the memos office we have soundproof phone booths where you can make private calls and host video chats. We also have a range of bookable meeting rooms and options to rent private office space. Enjoy the best of both worlds – thrive in a group setting or zone out in your own personal bubble. Either way, we guarantee a comfortable seat.

#6 It’s expensive

Contrary to popular belief, renting shared office space can actually save you as much as 26% per employee over five years. The premium aspect of centrally located offices, exquisite interior design, modern technology and high-class services, often cause professionals to add a hefty price tag to coworking packages. In reality, a daily pass at memos, is as affordable as €15 a day, with a fixed desk going for €250 a month. And with what you get being so much more than just a desk, it’s hard to find a reason not to invest!

#7 You have to be in your twenties

Before we go any further, the average age of a coworking professional is 36 years old, with the most common age bracket being between 34 and 39. Need we say more? Age is just a number and we have every age in multiple numbers at memos.

#8 Only for freelancers

One of the most popular myths about the world of coworking is: We only cater to niche industries. The kind of mindset that coworking offices are only for freelancers who are sick of the flat whites at their local coffee shop. While freelancers are more than welcomed into our space, so are start-ups, small-to-medium businesses and even global corporates. Differences are the building blocks of communities and we’re ready to build the strongest one you’ve ever seen.

#9 It’s first come, first serve

While it may be fun to create a mini office Olympics each morning, our workspace is certainly not first come, first serve. Whether you would like to rent a shared desk, a private office or an entire suite - your space is yours as and when you choose to use it. Now when it comes to working in our communal area, we can’t guarantee that you’ll get exactly the same spot every time. But change is just as good a holiday, so make sure you vacation all around our workspace.

#10 All the space is the same

Each coworking office is completely different. The space is unique to the location, office size, ratio of onsite staff and communal layout. Within each shared space there are several membership packages. Ranging from options to rent desk space in quiet zones to daily passes where you can work in community areas. No space is the same, because no member's needs are exactly the same. So, find the perfect space for you and we promise you’ll find your place.

That’s enough myths for one day.

The Future of the Workplace

Everyday millions of people around the world meet in one place – the office. They clock in at 9 am and join the rat race in hunt for that elusive cheese. But what if you don’t even like cheese? W. Clement Stone once said, “You are a product of your environment.” So, are you choosing an environment that reflects who and what you want to be? We’re not sure about you, but we’ve never thought about a cubicle as having the power to change the world...

Speaking of the changing world, unless you’ve been trapped in a photocopy room, you have begun to notice three major changes in the workplace:

(1) the actual work being done.

(2) the people - or rather, the machines doing the work and ...

(3) the spaces we call our workplace.

Technology has completely transformed the face of jobs and now robotics have redefined it. Monotonous task-based work has now made way for problem solving and increased opportunities for human interaction in service models. However, this is not a “man vs. machine” revolution; it’s a natural progression that has allowed technology to enhance the workplace by marrying human skills with artificial intelligence. When it comes to the workplace, one of the biggest changes has been the cultural shift from traditional office spaces to coworking environments. But before we unpack this global phenomenon that has become a sub-sector in the commercial real estate market, let’s define what we mean by “coworking”.

Welcome to the world of coworking!

Simply put, coworking is exactly what its name implies. Working with others. A modern business service model that involves individuals working independently or collaboratively in a “shared desk” office space – think, honey beehive meets Google.

Buzzing aside, shared office spaces have completely transformed the traditional office structure. You know what we mean when we talk about the traditional office structure right? Everything in these offices always seems to be some shade of grey – even the paperclips (like the one you were staring at when you were counting the clock). The harsh LED lights constantly remind you to book your next dentist appointment, and the internet is slower than a toddler trying to put on a sock. Let’s face it, these offices are what dictionaries would be like if they were brought to life. But coworking offices speak a completely different language. One of artistic design, central locations, top-notch services and collaborative networking. In a shared office space like memos, you’ll never have to say, “one more hour to go” – because you’ll never be in the same spot for hours on end. Between our community lounges, personal offices, private booths, chill out spaces and fixed desks, you can plan your future instead of your great escape. So, rent office space at memos today.

4 reasons why coworking is the future (and traditional offices are not)

#1) Build your network just by going to work

The digital age is all about making connections. And while working from home in your sweatpants may have its appeal, the strongest connection you’ll have is with your broadband provider. Coworking spaces are a never-ending source of connectivity. Bounce ideas off of some of the brightest minds in the business, meet professionals you would never usually bump into at your local café and become a part of the ultimate coworking community. After all, the human experience is about making connections, so why not do what we were born to do, while getting paid to do it?

#2)  Smart spaces mean better work

Have you ever seen Apple’s “Mac vs. PC” advert? (You have to check it out). This video springs to mind when comparing the technology found in traditional offices to that of shared office spaces, like memos. Coworking spaces have been described as the modern mecca for digital nomads. Tech-savvy, like-minded professionals working in smart spaces more effectively than ever. Seamless building access control, Apple TVs, HDMI cables, state-of-the-art monitors, meeting room booking services, digital payment systems and high-speed internet. Steve Jobs eat your heart out!

#3 Centrally located office mean you are in the middle of the action

In business, location is everything. As cliché as it sounds, it’s true. A CBD office address is a huge advantage for businesses. It brings credibility, allows for closer proximity to clients, offers easy transport routes and of course (more importantly), allows you to be within walking distance of your favorite bakery or burger joint. Sold yet? On the topic of finances, centrally located coworking spaces give coworkers the opportunity to work in CBD locations at a fraction of the private price. Don’t forget that a desirable location can increase your chances of attracting top talent. So, upgrade your postcode today.

#4 Faster business growth than ever before

A well-connected coworking space can take a company from a contender to a game changer in their respective industry. Combining a solid reputation with healthy competition, opportunities to meet your next business partner and the ability to further inspire talented employees, are all the ingredients you need to boost your business. Coworking spaces are known for fostering dynamic partnerships across a variety of industries by expanding their networks (both internally and externally). And if you’re worried about needing more space, the flexibility of coworking memberships at memos allows you to quickly and easily upgrade your workspace.

By 2020 there are expected to be over 1 million members in coworking offices. Don’t miss your chance to join the revolution – rent desk space at memos and become part of the future of going to work!

5 Reasons to Relocate Your Business to a Coworking Space

Alexa play 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton. “Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a living” – for nearly 40 years this iconic song has summed up what working in an office is really like. And in the words of Miss Parton herself, “It’s all taking and no giving.” But, we’re humming to a new tune now. So cut the cagey cubicles, forget the flickering fluorescent lights and stop hiding your favorite coffee cup in the office plant pot – that can’t be hygienic. The world of coworking is here and it’s welcoming you to the future of going to work.

If you thought a company vending machine or 2-ply toilet paper was the height of office lifestyle, then think again. We’re about to shatter the 9 to 5 status quo.

Here’s the top 5 reasons why businesses are booming in coworking spaces.

#1 Enjoy the new work-life blend

Reading your emails on a yoga mat does not count as a work-life balance. In today’s digital age leaving your workspace doesn’t mean you’ve left your work. It’s nearly impossible to go offline completely, and burying your blackberry every night would lead to blisters. That’s why coworking offices don’t believe in the work-life balance. We believe in the work-life blend. Embracing both connectivity and comfort in a home away from home, that allows you to reach your full potential before you need to reach for your bed. At memos, high-speed Wi-Fi and conference rooms meet community lounges and chill out spaces. You can enjoy the social aspect of ‘life’ while being surrounded by the top-notch resources you need to ‘work’.

#2 Increase your productivity and engagement

If giants like Samsung, Microsoft and McDonalds are all wanting to rent private office space in coworking environments, they must be seeing some serious results. And by serious results, we’re talking double-digit, “call your family and friends” type of results. It’s no secret that employees working in shared office environments are more productive than those working in traditional workspaces (like the ones Dolly was singing about). According to Ergonomic Trends.com, 89% of employees feel happier after joining coworking offices, with 55% feeling as if they are part of a real community. Companies with engaged employees outperform those without by 202%, says Screen Cloud in their latest employee trend statistics. There you have it. The proof is in the pudding, and you better believe we have the biggest sweet tooth in the business!

#3 Get your creative juices flowing

There’s a quote by Jack London that says, “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club”. Now we don’t have any clubs lying around at memos, but we do have a secret weapon of our own – collaboration. Coworking spaces are hubs of innovation. Their artistic design, creative layouts and communal workflow create a one-stop-shop for networking and new ideas. Just walking into a coworking space gets your creative juices flowing. Sleek interior, individual expression, concepts coming to life. It’s like stepping into the ‘Wonderland’ of the working world. Picture the scene, you’re brainstorming in a booth with your colleague. Out of the corner of your eye you see two people run to the printer. Suddenly you realise your idea needs to be launched as a race. You pitch your concept and an award-winning campaign is born.

#4 Save money with shared office space

“What’s in it for us?” The real question is, what’s not. The main reason any business wants to know why they should relocate to a coworking space, is to know how it’s going to make them or save them money. At memos, we can do both. Renting a leased office requires a signature on a lengthy, expensive contract. What do you get for it? An empty space. And when you have just had to buy 35 dedicated desks, the ergonomics of your office chairs suddenly plummets from your priority list like leaves doing a free-dive off of a dying plant. Renting your own office for your business means business rates, which bring increased utility bills and tax. Don’t forget the ongoing maintenance associated with running an office. Plumbers and electricians don’t come free (even if it is the third time Derick’s dodgy extension cord has blown your circuit board). Let memos help you cut costs with coworking.

#5 Scale your business with ease

Have you ever been part of an office expansion where you have more colleagues than coffee cups? There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re in the Hunger Games when trying to find a seat at lunch or a plug point for your laptop. Perhaps you’ve been on the opposite end? A huge space with nothing in it, where a walk to the scanner can turn into a day trip away from your fixed desk. The biggest difference between coworking and traditional offices, is that it’s not one-size-fits-all. Whether you’re looking to rent desk space, rent private office space, work from a shared desk or hire an entire suite - we have a scalable solution for you. So, expand or downscale as you see fit. At memos, our team is equipped to help you transition into your new space with ease. We bring the flexibility, so you don’t have to make it a stretch.

Have you been considering joining a shared office space like memos? Haven’t been able to make up your mind yet? Let us do it for you. You’ll save money, see results, feel inspired, have the opportunity to grow and blend your work-life perfectly. So, “tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen, pour yourself a cup of ambition” and join the ultimate coworking community today.
